Commerce Michigan Real Estate

Commerce Township is a Charter Township located in the southwestern part of Oakland County. It's also known by many as the “lakes area,” for which that section of the state has become famous. Commerce Township was once a place where Detroiters would go to spend a relaxing weekend or summer getaway because of all the small inland lakes. It was considered the territory one would travel to when going “up north.” Up until the past 15-20 years the lakes had nothing but cottages, but now the cottages are being rapidly bought up, only to be demolished and rebuilt into the latest and greatest in upscale living.

The population in Commerce Township has experienced one of the largest growth spurts in Oakland County due to the addition of the new highway M-5. This highway was recently extended to Pontiac Trail, alleviating much of the traffic constraints to other major expressways that held Commerce Township back for many years. Future plans have just been approved to extend highway M-5 north to Oakley Park road. This will only increase the demand for Commerce Township home ownership.

Commerce Township supports a upwards of 28 lakes totaling 1,704 acres within the township limits including many all sports lakes including Long Lake, Lower Straits, Middle Straits, Commerce Lake, Union Lake, Lake Sherwood, Carroll Lake, Cooley Lake, Fox Lake, and Wolverine Lake. For those who love the water, but not the action of motorized watercraft, there are quiet waters on Bass Lake, Clark Lake, Tray Lake, Twin Suns Lake, and Cranberry Lake.

The township has six golf courses, Eldorado, Glenlore Golf Club, Union Lake Golf Course, Beacon Hill Golf Club, Links of Pinewood, and the only private course called Edgewood Country Club. A favorite for local area residents in the township of Commerce is the Long Family Orchard and Farm, where you can pick your own fresh grown strawberries, cherries, pumpkins, gourds and apples. Kids love such treats as caramel apples or chocolate covered berries. Tours are available on the weekends, and there is a petting farm for “kids” of all ages.

Upscale dining is usually done at The Commerce Grille located on Union Lake Road in the Uptown Plaza or at a local favorite A Matter of Taste, which is located on the waterfront with balcony seating overlooking all sports Union Lake.

Local patrons looking for a great haircut for a very economical price usually go to Fantastic Sams located at 2516 Union Lake road, in Malek's Uptown Plaza. The shopping center is located 1/2 mile north of Commerce road on the west side of Union Lake Road. When you walk in you might be confused because it's not your average Fantastic Sams. It looks like a very high end independent salon with very modern upscale decor. Haircuts are $14.95 with color and highlight services also available. The manager and head stylist is Lisa Kandah.

Richardson Park has the only natural prairie land east of the Mississippi River.

Brief History of Commerce Township

Commerce was a very busy community in the early days and it received its name from the growing trade and business. In 1825, a national historical event took place which had a strong bearing on the early start up of Commerce Township. That event was the opening of the Erie Canal through the state of New York, and accounts for many of the early settlers migrating from that state.

The first settler of the township was Abram Walrod, who arrived from the state of New York in May,1825. He settled on Section 10, on the present site of the village of Commerce. He built a log house there, and after living in it for two or three years he moved out to the western part of Michigan.

The year 1836 was the year that marked the first frame house built by Henry Paddock, who was Commerce’s first merchant. The first post office was kept by Richard Burt in his tavern, which he built in 1834. The first grist mill on the village site was brought about by Crossman, Seymour and Hoover in 1838. The plant was eventually converted into a cider factory.

The first school was taught at Walled Lake in the winters of 1833 and 1834; the teacher was Mrs. Fanny Tuttle. In 1922-1923, the various schools in the area were merged with the township, making it the largest consolidated district in Michigan. As time passed, more schools were introduced to the consolidation; Union Lake in 1928, Wixom in 1946 and Dublin in 1967.

On March 7, 1834, the township of Commerce was detached from Novi. The first post office in the township was established at Walled Lake in 1832. Deacon William Tenny carried the mail on horseback.

Today the township is served by two major post offices located in Walled Lake and Union Lake. The township office is located in center of town on Fisher Street.
