Rochester Hills Community Historical Facts

Originally called Avon Township, the Rochester Hills and Rochester community were founded and settled in 1817 because of its proximity to the Clinton River, Stoney Creek and Paint Creek which provided water-power for mills. Throughout the 1800’s the land was starting to be cleared so crops could be harvested however city factories soon took over at the turn of the century and the farming industry ceased to flourish.

Throughout the 1900’s with the Depression and then the post-war boom, Avon Township continued growing creating school districts, subdivisions and a lifestyle that appealed to the suburban appetite. A vote in 1984 officially changed the name of this city to Rochester Hills.
