Clarkston Historical Facts

Clarkston’s history dates back to 1823, when residents in nearby Waterford bought property in the community. It wasn’t until almost ten years later that things really started happening for Clarkston, though. A man named Jeremiah Clark put down roots in the late 1830s and was soon met by his brother, who built a home there. This home still exists!

Jeremiah Clark and his brother, Nelson, started a fish hatchery, opened a general store, and planted the first apple trees. People from New York and New Jersey started coming to this area and, in 1842, they voted to name the community after these two brothers.

In 1980 Clarkston was listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and in 1992 the residents voted to incorporate the village into a city, which is how it gets the name "The City of the Village of Clarkston."
