Farmington Historical Facts

Farmington was originally founded in 1824 by Quakers who came from Farmington, New York. Within five years, there was an established post office and school. It was around this time that Farmington Township was officially established.

Farmington was home to Fred Warner, the 26th governor of Michigan. He served from 1905-1911 and his home still stands off of Grand River Avenue. Although it was Governor Warner's father who built the home, the Victorian Italianate house is a museum dedicated to the famous Farmington native and has many exhibits worth checking out.

Farmington was primarily a small farming community until the 1950s when people who lived in Detroit started heading out to the suburbs and, in the 1960s, after annexing 500 acres, Farmington extended its western border. Farmington still holds a small town charm with its historic downtown area complete with 2-screen movie theater, historic buildings, and its famous Farmington Founders Festival that has been a local favorite for over 50 years.
