Orion Township Community Historical Facts

Dating back to 1824, the first settlers put their roots down in the Orion Township community by building a saw mill as well as an orchard to help build commerce in the area. Originally named Canandaigua based off of Canandaigua, New York where the settlers were from, the area grew into a major commerce center with taverns, shops and dams being constructed to help fuel the economy. Just six years after the founding of Canandaigua it was renamed as the Township of Orion.

Throughout the 1800’s trains and railroads provided a steady stream of commerce including a passenger line but this ceased to be in existence in 1931 when automobiles became the more popular mode of transportation – commercial railroad still thrived though. A similar fate happened to the Park Island Amusement Park which brought many metro Detroiters to the Orion Township neighborhood but because of the Great Depression followed by other economic factors, the amusement park was forced to close permanently in 1955.
